Vocal Lesson Recommendation: Sean Wong (Taipei)

It seems I am raising a future blogger.  My son wrote this concise recommendation for his vocal coach: http://cubscouterblog.wordpress.com/2014/08/04/seans-singing-class/

As a mom of a boy who loves to perform, I am feeling extremely grateful for the opportunities that have come by our family this year.  One big spin-off from my son's role in Zeelandia is the connections we made here in Taipei.  Kyle's lessons with Sean Wong is one very good example. Sean is great with kids. He treats them as young professionals. He sets high standards and lets them take part in the decision-making process.

You can contact Sean directly for more information. He teaches children and adults.  info@seancswong.com

MOCA - Museum Of Contemporary Art, Including Children's Exploration Room and Art Classes

My children had a random Tuesday off school recently, which of course meant the Hsieh family headed to a museum.  My kids are in love with Taiwan's museums, hence the 60-plus posts I have on this blog covering them.

We decided to go downtown and visit MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art. On Chang-An West Road, just west of Chung-Shan North Road, the museum is central and easy to access.  The front courtyard is long, making it an ideal spot for 3-D art and sculptures.  Right now, they have a toy theme going on.  My kids were fascinated by the semi-deflated airplane.

There are tables available at one end of the courtyard, and a coffee shop at the other.  We chose to get some 7-11 take-out and sit under the trees.  We then headed into the museum.  Entrance is free for children attending schools in Taiwan.  If your school has ID, it is best to take it.  I had to answer a quiz about schooling in Taipei to get the free entry.  It's NT50 for adults.  There are lockers for your bags, that require a NT10 deposit that you get back when you open the locker at the end of the visit.

The foyer has a rest area and information desk.  You can rent earphones, or download the soundtrack from a kiosk directly to your device.  We did neither.  They did tell me that this summer's exhibits should have kid-friendly audio available, which would be wonderful.

The current exhibit, Korean K-POP, runs until June 15th.  It is a fantastic exhibit that my children found interesting and a little disturbing.  There is one part on the third floor that the volunteers will suggest your steer your children away from.  My children were disturbed but compelled by the sculptures.  I would suggest skipping that floor if your children are sensitive.  The rest of the work stimulated their curiosity, and I regretted not getting the tour or audio tour, because I think it would have helped them understand the works better.

My children decided to try some shots fitting with the theme of the artwork.

The discovery on this trip was the children's art room.  Entry is free. It's for children 12 years of age and under. They must be accompanied by an adult.  There are three sessions throughout the day.  You can check out up-to-date information here.  You can go directly to the U12小玩藝教室 directly, without having to pay to see the other exhibits.

The room is updated every time the exhibit in the museum changes, and follows the overall theme of the exhibit.  Here, my children are doing screen-printing using animal stencils.

They then built castles with the blocks, and rode their Rody's into the structures, re-enacting the Armageddon-like moving model and video upstairs.

These pictures are made with fabric stuck onto magnets, that you move around a giant magnetic blackboard.  This is my "Ducks" work. (When you spend three hours in a museum with your children, you find things to entertain yourself.)

 Kyle's "Fisherman".

 Hannah's "Zebra".

There are also sensory toys, books, and musical instruments freely available for children to experiment with.

Back in the foyer, the children discovered some free models you can cut out and put together. You then create your own piece for the "K-POP" exhibit.

From 3pm until 10pm, this awesome toy is operational.  Space Invader game!  You sit inside the robot-tank and shoot aliens on the giant screen a distance away from you.  There is a step inside so children can reach the controls and look out the window. It's free to use.

The museum is offering some pretty good art classes and camps over summer.  Information is on their website.

We'll definitely go back to see the next exhibit.  The art room is great for children from very small to about 10 years old.  Suitability of the art exhibits will depend on what your children like and what the themes are.

The Permaculture Experience, Shilin - Ongoing Activities

I haven't been here and don't currently have time to write detailed translations introducing this place, but it looks like it has potential for families wanting to do DIY, let children try rice harvesting, make their own cheese or, uh-hum, beer (OK, for the parents) and other nature-like activities as the seasons pass.

Yamanagarden's site is totally in Chinese, so be prepared for that.

Chance to Teach Your Children About Farming and Nature - Neihu

Trying to catch up with some reading on Taiwan's resources for children, I found this English-language article at http://www.culture.tw , introducing a Taiwanese gentleman running classes for kids, teaching them about organic gardening and letting them get right into nature.  Martin Lin's blog is in Chinese, and has details of upcoming courses and enrolment procedures.

Society of Wilderness - Sunday Journey through Da An Park

Da An Park is a great place to take the kids to play, run around, and enjoy open spaces.  But, did you know it is also a great place to learn about ecology?

The third Sunday of every month at 9am, there will be a group of people waiting  at Entrance No. 5 (Hoping East Road).  You can take your children there and enjoy a family morning of learning.  Members of the Taiwan Society of Wildnerness will lead you around and teach you about the special ecological features of the park.  This is in Chinese, although members of the group try their best to use English to introduce things to those who need some assistance.

Taipei City Fire Dept's Fire Safety Museum

I'm sure I saw these on a Dr Who episode many years ago.
After the local Fire Department visited my son's school, he told me how they had set up a smokey room for the children to crawl through as part of a fire safety demonstration.  This triggered my memory; there is a Fire Safety Museum in Neihu, Taipei, that I visited years ago as a teacher.  I decided to take the children there to see how they reacted to it.  It was worth the trip.

On arrival, we registered, and waited for the staff member who would show us around.  Individuals and groups all get the option of having a guided tour (in Chinese).  We went directly to the floor with the smoke-simulator, and the children had a lesson on fire safety, what to do in a fire, and how to call 119.  Then, they watched a short video to reinforce it.  After that, we walked through the corridors that are set up to simulate a fire in a building.  I think this is a really good thing for children to be able to do.  My four-year-old was nervous, but my six-year-old went through twice.

After the walk-through, the children were taught how to open the safety doors, and how to open an elevator in an emergency.  Then, we headed to the earthquake simulator area.  We watched a video of the 921 earthquake and scientific explanation of tectonic plates, and then had a lesson on what to do in an earthquake.  The children then got to try out their skills in dealing with an earthquake up to 6.0 in force.  After that excitement, it was time for a short video in the AV room, and then down to play in the playroom on the first floor.

There are number of other areas that we didn't explore.  There is an area outside to try out fire hoses, and rooms set up to teach children and parents about safety in the home.  If you like classic vehicles, you can appreciate the vintage fire engines and other equipment set up throughout the museum.

This museum is an educational experience.  It is most suitable for children aged four to nine years.  Entrance is free.  You can find hours of opening and address on their English website.

SOHO Art Education Center (a children's art area, Tienmu)

This is one of my kids' favorite places in Taipei.  It is entirely child-focused, and makes art reachable and exciting for children (and parents!).  Everything inside is inticing and encourages children to touch, experience, and explore.

I'll share a few pictures of the current exhibit (Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol), and some images of my children doing their DIY activity (ink and paint to make your own notebook).

Drying the project

In Matisse's painting.  Children changed the woman's clothes to learn how color can affect the outcome of a painting.  This is a room made into a painting.  There was also a cafe where children served a life-sized model of Van Gogh, and another where they experienced how Matisse drew on his wall from his bed during times of illness.

Can you see the faces made from fruit?  These are modeled on the art of an Italian 16th Century artist.  My kids moved the fruit pieces to make their own art.

Lift the flaps and learn about color mixing.

Art teacher helps my son with this book cover.
Entry is 100 per person.  You can join the free art tours (in Chinese), and you get to make a clay necklace at the end.  The DIY projects run on weekends, and are 250 per person (90 minute lessons).  The teachers really know how to teach and inspire children.  My children would not go to bed tonight; they were drawing about their day at the art museum, in their new handmade books!

2010 Homeschooling Fair (Sunday, Feb 7)

Taiwan Homeschool Advocates invites you to 2010 Taiwan International Homeschool Fair

Did you know homeschooling has been legal since 1997? The number of homeschoolers has grown from 4 in 1997 to 883 in 2009! Taipei plans to offer high school students the option to homeschool this year. Homeschooling is really taking off in Taiwan and you can not miss the biggest gathering of homeschoolers on Sunday, February 7 between 2 to 5 pm.

Homeschooling is a real alternative to both international and local schools especially for international families. Homeschooling is much more affordable than international schools. You don't need to subject your child to endless and mindless exam schedule found in the local schools. In fact, you can teach your child your home country's curriculum and still receive diploma from the public school you register with.

Homeschool families from Taipei, Hualien, Yilan, Xinchu and Tainan will display their works at the fair. International homeschool families from Poland, the UK, the USA and Russia will exhibit their teaching materials and students' projects. Class and activity organizers such as Fun Formosa, Encounters, YMCA Seeker Christian Academy and Waldorf School will present their programs as well.

There will be five seminars on the following topics:
• Parent Coach by Mujen Christian Homeschool Association (in Chinese)
• Sycamore Tree Program by YMCA Seeker Christian Academy (in English)
• Independent Educators by Autonomous Learning Association (in Chinese)
• International Homeschool Exchange Program by Encounters (in English)
• High School and Pre-School Program by Humanity and Differential Education Association (in Chinese)

The entrance is free. You can pre-register on this site:

http://2t.chen-wernik.net/

Date: February 7, 2010
Time: 2 pm. to 5 pm
Place: Bethany School
Address: No. 97, Ting Chou Road Section 3, Taipei (Gongguan area)
